Find your poetry style

December 28th, 2008

As a free verse poet I wanted to broaden my
writing, so I decided to take a look at the different styles of poetry. There
is a time in every artist life when we must develop new knowledge. Poetry is
pretty diverse and there are many different styles and many different ways to
teach those styles. So I mustered up the courage and I tried out different
styles of poetry.

In this article we will cover ten different styles of poetry. We will look at
acrostic, cinquain, Letter, Triolet, Toungue Twisters, Couplet,
ghazal, Quatrain,
Epiphany,
Limerick.
Now let
us try your pen at these different styles.

Acrostic Poetry

An acrostic poem has to be one of
the simplest poems that I found to write. You start with putting the letters of
the word you have chosen for your subject down the side of your page. Then you
go to each letter and think of a sentence that starts with that letter. Here is
an example of a acrostic poem that I have written in this format.

RoseMarie

Reflections
of life

On passion shores

Surrender myself to thee

Embraced by warms arms

Moonlight lovely my Rose

A toast to our Life

Rose my destiny

Intimate moments and melodies

Endless love begins with you RoseMarie

Cinquain Poetry

Cinquain poetry is fun and it allows
one to be creative. A cinquain is a five line poem. It follows this pattern

Line 1:

one word

(subject or noun)

Line 2:

two words

(adjectives) that describe line 1

Line 3:

three words

(action verbs) that relate to line 1

Line 4:

four words

(A complete sentence) that relates to line 1

Line 5:

one word

(synonym of line 1 or a word that sums it up)

Cinquain poetry was invited in
America by Adelaide Crapsey. A young poet who died to soon. She contracted
tuberculosis and died at the age of 36. Below is an example of a Cinquain poetry
written by me.

Husband

faithful, strong

Caring, compassionate, courageous

A hero among boys

-Friend

Triolet Poem

A French verse form of eight lines
with this rhyme scheme:

A

B

a - Rhymes with 1st line.

A - Identical to 1st line.

a - Rhymes with 1st line.

b - Rhymes with 2nd line.

A - Identical to 1st line.

B - Identical to 2nd line

Examples of triolet Poem can be found in the late 13th century and were usually
about love. Take for example the following that I have written.

Wind beneath my wings

Misty eye memories of you come to
mind

You are the wind beneath my wings

So much of you I thought I would forget

Misty eye memories of you come to mind

I see the shadow of your silhouette

A hold of you I forever cling

Misty eye memories of you come to mind

You are the wind beneath my wings

Toungue Twisters

Toungue twisters were they made for
no other reason than to twist your tongue? Short little poems like the
traditional one of Sally sells sea shells by the sea shore told a story. Let me
try this.

Juvenile Jacob James jokes joyfully jumping jacks

Johnny Jiggs joins Jacob and they jump jacks

Jiving joyfully Jacob and Johnny jump jacks
Couplet

A couplet is a pair of lines
of poetry that are usually rhymed. Some poems, like the famous “The Night Before
Christmas,” were written entirely in couplets.
The
shortest stanza is the couplet. Alexander Pope, in the 18th century perfected a
form of heroic couplet.

Then share thy pain, allow that sad
relief;

Ah, more than share it, give me all thy grief.

- Alexander Pope

Below is an example of another couplet written by me.

If a man fears love, if he fears
what is still unknown

Then he will live his life old and alone.

ghazal

A
poem of five to fifteen couplets.
It shares a rhyme
and a refrain. This form of poetry
can be traced back to

seventh-century Arabia. Here is a ghazal of mine.

To man who fears love

If a man fears love, if he fears what is still
unknown

then he will live his life old and alone

When his sorrow he can not awaken and he is forsaken

He will have no choice but to face tomorrow alone

Only through love do we give, do we open our hearts and live

But for man who does not see, he shall sit alone

When the nights are cold and he has no one to hold

He will feel half dead, for he is alone

For everyday he lives, everyday he refuses to give

He comes one day closer to dieing alone

Walking through the valley of his own grief, time is a thief

For tomorrow he will die old and alone

Epiphany poem

A moment of epiphany is when your
eyes are opened to something in life that you were previously blind to.
Epiphany: A sudden revelation of truth inspired by a seemingly trivial incident.
The term was widely used by James Joyce in his critical writings, and the
stories in Joyce’s Dubliners are commonly called "epiphanies."

Here is an example of an epiphany poem that I have written.

When life becomes a peaceful death

Watching you die

Sitting at your bedside

wiping your brow

whispering the words

God is with you now

I’ll be ok Momma

just go to sleep

I held tight to your hand

You said goodbye with your eyes

A calmness now over your body

passing over,

I watch you find eternal rest

I was now awakened ,acquainted

for the first time in my life

with the meaning of life and

how peaceful was death

The above poem was about the passing
of my mother. Notice how my eyes were open at that last breath ,when I realized
that death wad not a frightening thing.

Limerick

Limericks are suppose to be funny
therefore you can be as silly as you like. Popular limericks go back to the
1800’s with Edward Lear nursery rhyme, "Hickory, Dickory, Dock," It is a form of
light verse containing five lines, in which the l st , 2 nd , and 5 th lines
rhyme and the 3 rd and 4 th lines rhyme.

Let me try it

There once was a dumb blond named
meg

Whose brain was liked fried eggs

One day walking in spiked heals

She slipped on some banana peels

Now she has a broken leg

Letter Poems

They were poems that were
written in the form of letters. Emily Dickinson, a creative poet of the 19th
century
used this style of writing.
Here is a poem that I have written in the form of a letter.

Perfumed letter for my love

Oh my dear sweet love, I received
your letter today.

Oh how I miss thee.

The nights are cold and lonely without you.

I do await your arrival home soon.

The days of winter have been long and lonesome.

I look out my window, seeking a sign of spring.

I await the return of the sweet sound of the hummingbird.

When I think of her soft melody, I think of you.

You exist my love in my dreams at night.

I savor the taste of your last kiss.

You are so far away my love, but not far from my heart.

I must go now my love as father is coming.

I will write you again soon.

Until we can again be together, tuck my letter under your pillow.

I have scented it with my favorite perfume.

Love, your precious Rose

Quatrain Poetry

A Quatrain is a poem consisting of
four lines of verse with a specific rhyming scheme.

Dreams of you take flight

In the early morning light

My heart whispers softly love

Sunrise holds secrets dreamed of

The first line rhymes with the second ( flight and light)

and the third line rhymes with the fourth line (Love and of )

In my next article we will look at
more styles of poetry. In the mean time try your hand at these and be sure to
send me some of your results.

Rock with a Purpose

December 26th, 2008

Rock with a Purpose Catholic Music Spotlight Interview with David Wang, Critical Mass by Lisa M. Hendey

David Wang, founder and lead singer of the highly regarded Catholic rock group Critical Mass, is one cool Catholic dad. This husband, university professor, and homeschooling dad of nine makes time to practice his lead vocals while driving or in the late night hours. His dedication to his craft is impressive, and even more so once you have the opportunity to sit down and listen to one of Critical Mass’ CDs.

With their third project, Grasping for Hope in the Darkness, this award winning band tells a compelling tale. While each of the songs stands on its own merit, the cumulative effect is a saga of overcoming sin and temptation, a life of tragedy and despair, and an ultimate turning of the heart to find peace in God. Music fans of “a certain age” will love the band’s cover of the classic “Carry On Wayward Son” as much as their kids will enjoy the updated take. As the mom of a teenager, I’m always thrilled to find music that my son and I can both enjoy. Critical Mass has given us that gift with Grasping for Hope in the Darkness - its musicality is awesome and the storyline of the project is both gripping and a message you’ll want to share with the young people in your life.

In advance of their upcoming Fall Tour, I had an opportunity to catch up with David Wang of Critical Mass. He shared the following comments on the band, their latest CD and Catholic rock today.

Q: David Wang and Critical Mass, please introduce us to the current members of the band and give us a bit of history about your group.

A: I am the founder of Critical Mass. Critical Mass has been around since 1997 and we’ve released three studio albums. Faith Looks Up was a demo recording but ended up winning Best Modern Rock album awards from the United Catholic Music and Video Association. Our sophomore album, Completely, won Best Rock Album honors from the Canadian Gospel Music Association. That led to our being one of the main bands for World Youth Day 2002 where the band performed music ministry for almost 1 million people. If you were at the Papal Welcoming or the Papal Vigil, you were listening to Critical Mass. The song, Share it With the World, was on the World Youth Day compilation CD, which sold 40,000 copies. After WYD 2002, there was a turnover in band members. The new members of Critical Mass bring a fresh, edgy sound to live performances and we are now touring in support of the album, Grasping for Hope in the Darkness, which is garnering very good reviews.

Q: David, as a mom I have to ask, how does a dad of nine and a university professor find time to write and perform Christian Rock?

A: As with most Catholic musicians, this is a part time endeavor. Most practices, studio time and songwriting occur between the hours of 9pn and 1am. I practice a lot of my vocals in the car whenever I am driving. Whereas some people would take time to sit and watch television, I take all my spare time and dedicate it to my music. With 9 kids, a vacation where we travel is not necessarily restful so we often combine music tour dates with an opportunity to travel. We home-school which gives us the flexibility to hit the road occasionally.

Q: What do your wife and kids think of having a rock star for a dad?

A: The kids have grown up with this. Jodie, my wonderful and incredible wife, was part of the band until shortly after World Youth Day 2002. She was one of the female vocalists on the previous album. My kids sing a bit on this album and are quite used to seeing their dad jump around on stage. In terms of being a “rock star”, there really is no such thing in the Catholic market. There is more of an attitude of serving than in the secular markets.

Q: I’ve read reviews calling your newest CD “Grasping for Hope in the Darkness” a “concept CD”. What came first - the songs or the storyline? Can you share the creative process that went into writing and recording this CD?

A: This CD does indeed have a story line. It is a concept album and every song ties into the storyline. It has a very heavy Pink Floyd “The Wall” influence. Some of the songs were written first but it became very clear early on that this could be morphed into a concept album. It took a bit to convince the producer, Andrew Horrocks, that I wasn’t crazy but once he was sold on the idea, everything clicked into place very quickly. One unusual thing about this album, however, is that most of the words were written first. This is opposite to the way most albums are written but it was a necessity for a concept album.

Q: For our readers who haven’t yet heard the CD, give us an overview of the storyline you present?

A: Essentially, it is a story about a man who is lured and tempted away from God by secular things in his life, such as money, power and pornography. He has a daughter, whom he neglects, and she turns to a lurid lifestyle because of this. She ends up getting pregnant is her father tries to convince her to have an abortion. However, a kindly priest intervenes to save the unborn child. The father is furious and confronts the priest with much anger. Years later, however, the daughter dies suddenly in a car accident and the father is distraught. Out of despair, he returns to the priest and learns that his daughter had found peace with God. This causes his heart to finally melt. He is a changed man when he takes up the responsibility of raising his granddaughter. At his death, he is finally reunited with his daughter in heaven and with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Q: How did you decide to cover “Carry On Wayward Son” and can you tell us about the rap featured in this song? What type of reaction do you get when you play this song live?

A: Carry On is a song that I have always loved. The songwriter, Kerry Livgren of Kansas, was searching for God during the time that he wrote the song and he actually converted to Christianity a few years later. I added a rap to make it more relevant to the CD and I used it as an overture for the album at the start. It was a real challenge to remain faithful to the original but also to give it a contemporary feel.

Q: I have to ask you - what it was like to perform at Toronto’s World Youth Day for the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II?

A: It was awe-inspiring. We were one of the fortunate few that caught to witness our Holy Father’s suffering and strength from up close. It was incredible how he drew strength from the youth. Just when you thought he would have to stop from exhaustion, the chanting from the youth seemed to reinvigorate him and he would continue on. I think this is a model for how we should now interact with him now that he is with God in heaven. I really believe that he will be a powerful aid to the youth. I encourage all youth to pray for intercession from this holy saint. I picture the world’s youth continuing to reach out to JPII and I picture him continuing to guide and lead the youth of the world.

Q: What is the future of Catholic rock? How can we help support and encourage more great Catholic music?

A: We need more musicians to counter the secular influences in popular culture. This includes not only rock but other genres of music such as hip-hop. It also includes not only music but also television, movies and other art forms. For centuries, the Catholic Church has influenced the world through her music and art. The Sistine chapel is such an example. It is now the time to re-establish Catholic art as second-to-none in quality. A recent example of the influence of this would be Mel Gibson’s “Passion of the Christ”. However, as audiences did for this superb film, we need Catholics to support Catholic musicians. It takes finances and resources to produce music to compete with the secular counterparts in terms of qualities. Catholics need to start buying catholic music and going to concerts.

Q: What do Catholic kids want in their music? How can Catholic parents help their kids tune in to music that elevates the soul and spirit?

A: Catholic parents have to start to understand the influence of music in the child’s life. I have had some parents refuse to buy Catholic rock but are troubled when their kids start to sing and listen to the garbage that is not only on the radio but is everywhere around us, from stores to the television to their friend’s mp3 players. They try to buy very traditional Catholic music and force their children to listen to it. What we have found is the opposite. We produce rock that sounds and feels like what they listen to now. We try to touch their lives in a subliminal way, in much the same way that secular messages seep into their brains through repeated listening. If the kids can maintain that contact, however frail, with the messages of the Church, then we have found that the kids eventually return to the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and Confession. Surprisingly, at this point, many of the kids do start to listen to more traditional music (Gregorian chant, for example) and have a deeper appreciation for the ancient traditions of our faith.

Q: Some feel that rock music comes from the devil and that one shouldn’t use rock music to try to glorify God. How do you feel about this?

A: I believe that art is neutral. It is the lyrical content that makes it either spiritual or secular. There are some that say that the rhythms of rock music are derived from African tribal beats. That may be true but to say that traditional folk music from Africa is somehow evil is prejudice in its ugliest form. One must remember that the organ and piano were once considered by the church to be secular and profane instruments. Even Gregorian chant, one of Catholicism’s great contributions to music, comes from Gregory the Great’s time (590-604). Music has always been in a state of change and transition.

Q: Tell us about your upcoming Fall Tour. We are touring Canada in the fall and we will be doing many US dates in 2006, which will be the focus of our ministry.

Simple Happiness

December 26th, 2008

If you aren’t happy, why aren’t you?

Chances are it is because you want something which you do not have, objects or conditions. This is probably not a good enough reason and a review of your situation and perceptions may be in order.

You may have seen video of children in very poor countries laughing and playing, unconcerned that they should have more to be happy about. They are happy because they are playing, because they have their friends and family, and some food to eat that day. Everyone has the right to be happy, and if they can be in their situation, shouldn’t you?

“Happiness consists more in small conveniences of pleasures that occur every day, than in great pieces of good fortune that happen but seldom to a man in the course of his life.” - Ben Franklin (1706-1790)

Happiness is inside us, in our minds, in our thinking. It is not external material things or experiences, but the enjoyment of our thoughts and feelings. This is good because our thoughts, and therefore our happiness, are up to us.

Start by reviewing the things that you have to be happy about and dwell on these. Don’t overlook the little or basic things that you take for granted.

Make a habit of substituting unhappy thoughts with happy thoughts. Whenever an unfavorable picture enters your mind, eject it and replace it with a pleasant one. We all have some nice experiences to recollect and there are usually little pleasures around us most of the time. You can even imagine enjoyable experiences, and it will have a similar positive effect.

“Happiness is like a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.” - Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)

Establish good principles and conduct yourself according to these principles. Love, or at least be tolerant of, your fellow humans. Don’t strive too hard for that which, in the end, will not make you happier.

Regression and the Benefits

December 25th, 2008

Regression work is a personal growth process that involves recovering events from the past which, if left unresolved, are impacting negatively on our present-day affairs. Unresolved issues can stem from situations in childhood, birth, prenatal states, “past lives” or “between lives”. The regression process refers to the client’s experience of “going back” to an important event in his/her past where he/she experiences the event as though it were occurring now. All the appropriate physical and emotional processes can be brought to sensate awareness and thoughts can be experienced. In this state the client gets a “second chance,” to fully experience and process an event from his/her past which, for various reasons, he/she couldn’t or didn’t effectively process at the time of the event.

While it is usually fairly easy for a client to access a past event, it is often quite difficult for him/her to allow him/herself to feel and express the various emotions he/she had originally suppressed. And yet, unless this is done, healing will only become a partial achievement without a complete resolution of the issues involved.

What are the benefits of Regression work?

In general, by understanding why one feels the way one feels and processing those feelings; one feels grounded as well as in command and life becomes more enjoyable! The person can raise their level of self-esteem and they become more aware of how they create their own reality. Thus, they become more self-empowered. As they come to know and accept who they really are, their interaction with the world around them become real, here and now. Creativity and love flourish.

There are no limits to the kind or number of benefits that emanate from regression workmentally, intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. However, some examples are: resolution of relationship difficulties, career success, as well as elimination of nightmares, phobias, obsessions, compulsive or addictive behaviors, chronic physical conditions, memory problems and psychosomatic disorders. Entire books have been written describing examples of this work and the resultant benefits.

Regression is effected through several techniquesit is direct, focused and combines healing the past while creating the future.

Whatever technique the practitioner might use to help a client get in touch with pertinent material, the client does achieve an altered state of consciousness, a sort of mild trance state (an alpha state) in which his/her attention is focused deeply inward in conjunction with a heightened awareness of both inner and outer goings-on. He/she can hear the facilitator’s voice and the building noises, and feel the temperature of the air in the room, while at the same time be deeply involved in visualizing and feeling the events of a past experience. It is similar to the kind of state achieved when studying intensely for an exam or when watching a movie. There is a part of the person that knows what is happening in the here and now reality, so he/she is in control of him/herself and his/her therapy.

The Definitive Guide to Boat Charters and Rentals

December 24th, 2008

Are you considering a boat charter and are unsure what is available or what to look for? Well here is your answer; this article will provide you with fun and interesting facts about boat charters. Boat charters are fun and exciting for any type of get together. They work well for family reunions, weddings, and even executive outings.

The size of your group will affect the size of the boat you can charter. There are two basic types of charter boats available; un-inspected passenger boats, or 6-pack boats (which are so named because they carry only six or fewer passengers), and inspected passenger boats.

6-pack boats are great for smaller groups of six or less, and these boats have a variety of types and sizes. For example, six pack boats can be sailboats, fishing boats, or cruising boats and anything in between. While this type of boat charter is the least expensive of the two, you will still need a licensed captain with you at all times. On six-pack charter boats you can have catering for meals while on board.

Inspected passenger boat charters are designed to carry groups large than six passengers. These too come in various shapes and sizes, inspected passenger boats can range from sailboats to dinner cruise ships. Some of these boat charters are designed to carry anywhere from six to several hundred passengers, depending on the type of boat you desire. Inspected passenger boats can offer you many different features that an un-inspected passenger boat cannot. Features like catering, destinations, live music, or a DJ are available on these larger boats.

These inspected passenger charter boats, are required to adhere to strict rules and regulations stated by the Coast Guard. Fees are based on the size, operating requirements, and extra features you want with the package, this includes any alcoholic beverages you wish you and your party to consume.

Boat charters can offer a wide variety of different aspects to your chartering experience. They can offer educational trips for children; these can make exciting learning experience for children of all ages to learn about the environment and boating. Most boat charters offer several different types of educational trips that can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

They are also great for executive outings to entertain clients, reward employees for a job well done, or as a way to create team-building events. Regardless of the reason you choose a boat charter, it is guaranteed to build a lasting impression on clients and employees alike.

Weddings on boat charters are also very popular. They allow the bride and groom to break out of the box when it comes to weddings and host an experience of a lifetime. By using one of the boats, you can create a full-blown wedding complete with an elaborate and elegant atmosphere or choose a simple, quaint, and casual wedding. Elaborate and elegant weddings can cost anywhere from $5000 to $30,000, dependant upon the type of wedding, size of the boat, and number of passenger guests you desire. Smaller weddings usually start at around $1,000.

Charter boats are also great for touring the local hot spots of an area or fishing. Whatever the event, choosing a boat charter is going to be a memorable experience for all involved.

Write a Short Book to Launch Your Speaking Business

December 24th, 2008

The myth continues-that a real book must be in print and it must be over 160 pages. Rethink the premier approach: Write a short book to get more bookings, get your word out to thousands, gain credibility, as well as vast virtual promotion and an ongoing increased stream of income.

1. Write your short (10 pages to 100 pages) print and eBook at the same time using the same word file.

Speakers need to know that business people’s reading hours are down from 123 hours per hear in 1999, to 109 hours in 2001, and in 2005–the figure is even lower. They want short how-to books.

Speakers have the edge over other businesses because you already have past talks, cassettes, or articles you’ve already written. Just dust them off with a new angle for each audience. This approach creates even more product.

2. If you don’t get a book out, you don’t get the bookings, your word out or ongoing income.

3. To get started:

-Write about what you know–you are the expert
-Solve your audience’s problem or challenge
-List 5-10 benefits and features of your book
-Know your thesis before you write a word
-List 3-5 major topics to later become your chapter titles
-List 3-5 sub points for one chapter title

Take just five - ten hours a week to get your book written in less than a month. Watch your speaking business thrive!

International Support - Microsoft Great Plains VAR/Partner Selection - Overview for V.P. IT

December 24th, 2008

Looks like Microsoft Great Plains becomes more and more popular, partly because of Microsoft muscles behind it. It seems to be goof solution for mid-size and even large multinational corporation with Headquarters in US and branches Worldwide. You, as V.P. IT can deploy the strategy, when you host your Great Plains in headquarter and have international offices connect via remote support. Or, you can have regional offices work of their own Great Plains installations and then consolidate information via FRx or other reporting tools

The challenging thing here is to get local Great Plains support for your regional offices. Ideally you should have Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains Partner - who serves your headquarter and has consultants/technicians close to your overseas operations. It is not always possible, due to multiple reasons:

Europe - in Europe Microsoft Business Solutions has Navision and Axapta lines - so you can not find (with some minor exceptions) local European Great Plains VAR - you have to appeal to remote support.

Multicurrency issue - US-based partners do not usually have this expertise. You have to appeal to ones, operated by former immigrants - there are partners present in two countries with balanced operations in both: like US-Brazil, US-Mexico, US-South Africa

Sophisticated consolidation - usually companies, participating in international business have complex ownership structure with vertical and horizontal structures, mostly due to the necessity to get diversified tax legislation advantage, etc. In this case you need the partner who has experience dealing with at least two or three megamarkets (Europe, East Europe, Asia, Latin America, etc.)

Property Index: the Intra National Real Estate Website

December 23rd, 2008

In spite of the fact that PropertyIndex.com may be considered a young bureau, they were founded only in March 2007, they have very swiftly established their expertise. On closer look, they’re a pretty artless bureau exclusively focused on guiding every client designing to let, sell etc. property almost anywhere in the world. They pledge to offer you assistance to spot precisely what’s desired very swiftly and, naturally, straightforwardly.

Property can be bought in the most popular regions of the world nowadays, one of the fanciest areas being property on the market in Dubai City. It should really be easy as pie to tick off the ripping property available for sale in Dubai City, one reason for opting for real estate here being properties available and the chance of living with this exciting, optimistic and strenuous population. It’s one of the truly favored regions of the world nowadays, and with the scenic splendor and agreeable sunshine surrounding you all day long, how could you conceivably say no! Property in Dubai City is steeped in history, this geographical region has been and still is home to numerous indigenous civilizations.

Property Index is an online platform that gives buyers access to thousands of properties www.propertyindex.com. Property in Dubai is currently booming so browse the range on offer at Property Index.

About twenty years ago there’d be just a small number of English looking for property in Dubai City. Ask everyone who has chosen to move to Dubai City and they’ll back it up. Many would describe it as a fad and others describe it as a practically a fetish. People that will move here extend from young yuppie couples looking for a new perspective to OAPs looking to enjoy themselves and take it easy. Note that you may have to wrestle with a few setbacks when attempting to purchase property overseas — there are normally a hundred heterogeneous, often not very intuitive, procedures whether strategizing, sightseeing or buying. Even if one single minor procedure is missed this can kick up dramatic setbacks plus, of course, even more importantly, financial damage.

Obviously, as is to be assumed with this trendy destination, property might be costly in this destination which is just on account of the peaking buyer demand. Yet, customers truly are spoiled in a part of the world so wonderful in terms of smiling vista. It definitely has practically everything any of us could really fall for etc.

A Blue Springs Missouri advocate won from a in Bridgeport Connecticut

December 21st, 2008

In Meacham Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory was planning to lay off a number of employees. The company had its supervisors rate their subordinates based on their performance flexibility and critical skills. A lawyer from Texel won from a lawfirm in Attleboro Massachusetts The Supreme Court ruled that if an employer seeks to rely on that defense. The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit initially affirmed the jurys findings but after the United States Supreme Court asked it to reconsider the Second Circuit reversed itself and ruled in favor of Knolls. In reaching its conclusion that the employer has the burden to prove the reasonable factors other than age defense the Supreme Court looked at another provision of the ADEA the bona fide occupational qualification defense. For example it would not be illegal to consider criteria for a particular role in a movie that has a disparate impact on age if the part calls for someone of a particular age. In that case Meacham versus Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory the Supreme Court interpreted a provision of the ADEA that permits an employer to take an adverse employment action against an employee. In other words the ADEA permits employers to discriminate based on age considering age is legitimately necessary under the circumstances. Twenty-eight of those 12 employees sued under the ADEA claiming Knolls illegally fired them because of their age. The Supreme Court then agreed to hear the case and eventually reversed the Second Circuit and reinstated the jurys finding that Knolls policy unlawfully discriminated because of age. Knolls totaled those scores and gave the employees additional points based on their years of service. It then used those totals to decide who to lay off. Thirty of the 31 salaried employees the company laid off were at least 40 years old. As long as the adverse action is based on reasonable factors other than age. At the trial a jury found Knolls had violated the ADEA because its layoff procedure had a disparate impact based on age. Even if the employment action is otherwise prohibited by the ADEA. Specifically the jury found that although the plaintiffs did not prove that Knolls intentionally discriminated against them they did prove that Knolls method of deciding who to lay off disproportionately harmed older workers. The BFOQ defense states that it is not unlawful for an employer to take adverse employment actions otherwise prohibited by the ADEA where age is a bona fide occupational qualification reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the particular business. The Supreme Court has previously recognized that the employer has the burden to establish the BFOQ affirmative defense. It has the burden to prove that its decision was based on a reasonable factor other than age.

Use Bundling To Increase Your Profits And Sales

December 21st, 2008

An effective way to increase your profits and sales is
to bundle many products or services together into one
package. This gives people more reasons to buy your
products and services. People also have come to
believe package deals are a better value. You want
all the products or services to be closely related. For
example: if you’re selling a computer you could add in
software, hardware, computer furniture, etc.

There are many ways to go about choosing the right
products or services to bundle into one package. You
could survey your customers and see what products
or services they would like you to offer in the future.
Spy on your competition and see what products and
services they’re offering or not offering. If you would
like to, bundle unrelated products or services together,
ask your customers which ones would be of interest
to them.

Bundling can also increase your target markets which
in return would give you a larger audience to sell your
products and services. For example: if you’re selling a
baseball magazine you could add a free baseball when
someone buys a subscription. You’re now targeting
people who want the baseball magazine and those that
want to play baseball out in the yard. Some people
buy a package deal just to get one of the products.

There are many sources where you can find products
and services to create a package deal. You can buy
them from wholesalers or drop shippers. You can
buy the reproduction/resell rights to other people’s
products. Team-up with your competition to create
a package deal. You could joint venture or cross
promotion deal with other businesses. You could also
create your own products and services. Be creative!
